In this lecture, Dr Dunant will describe how concrete is made today and the potential of various alternatives and mitigation strategies which have been proposed to abate the close to 8% of man-made emissions attributed to cement. He will preserve the work of his team on producing cement electrically, which is challenging due to the high temperatures, and how a judicious choice of raw materials can make cement and concrete construction a truly circular choice using the new technology he is developing.
Dr. Cyrille Dunant, Cambridge University Engineering Department
Cyrille Dunant is principal research associate in material efficiency in construction. He is a member of Rilem and fib, CTO of Structural PANDA and Cambridge Electric Cement. His background is mechanical engineering and material science, and has worked on a number of subjects, from steel reuse in construction to structural design practice to concrete durability are the microscale. He is passionate about making the most of available resources, and finding those technological solutions that will bridge the gap to a zero carbon world.
